Many parents have reservations about AI. I’ve found that, when used thoughtfully, it can become a practical parenting tool. For example, I think of AI as an assistant I’ve hired to brainstorm ideas. It never replaces my judgment—I always get the final say. But it helps me spend less time planning and more time with my children.
Here’s how I do it.
The developing brain thrives on experiences that engage multiple senses. Parents can use AI to help plan and create activities that provide those kinds of experiences—without layering on even more screen time. Parents can think of AI as a creativity coach, an activity planner, a storytelling partner, a scavenger hunt creator or a nature guide.
When you’re using AI to brainstorm ideas, remember that children build stronger neural connections when they:
To help you begin, the sections below start with common parenting challenges, what your child’s brain needs from activities that address those challenges and how AI can help you plan out activities that meet those needs. Remember, always review what AI gives you to make sure it’s safe and appropriate.
The best prompts describe your child’s interests, age range and personality, but not who they are. AI doesn’t need your child’s name, school or any other identifying details to come up with creative ideas. The goal is to give it enough information to understand your family without sharing personal details you wouldn’t normally post online.

AI can suggest family games, creative challenges and shared experiences by generating activities that fit your family members’ personalities, ages, interests and the amount of time you have available.
What your child’s brain needs
One of the greatest gifts we can give children is shared experiences. Laughing together, solving problems together and trying new things together strengthen relationships while helping children build confidence, resilience and social skills.
AI prompts you can try:
We have completely different talents and skill sets in our home. I use very specific prompts to make sure no one has an advantage over anyone else in the activities we do as a family. For example:
AI can help parents create more screen-free activities for kids and generate ideas that can turn their boredom into curiosity. Once children are engaged, their own imaginations usually take over.
What your child’s brain needs
When children aren’t constantly entertained, the brain’s Default Mode Network becomes active. This network supports imagination, creativity, reflection, problem-solving and future planning. Boredom gives children space to come up with their own ideas to experiment with and explore. The prompts below can help spark imagination.
AI prompts you can try:
Instead of asking AI to explain a topic, ask AI to create screen-free experiences that are personalized to your child’s age and interests to help bring the topic to life.
What your child’s brain needs
Children build stronger neural connections when they actively participate in experiences instead of just consuming information. Activities that combine movement, conversation, creativity and exploration help strengthen executive functioning, cognitive flexibility and long-term memory.
AI prompts you can try:
AI can generate thoughtful conversation starters, storytelling prompts and gratitude activities that encourage children to share ideas, feelings and experiences with family members.
What your child’s brain needs
Conversation helps children build emotional awareness, language skills, empathy and strong family relationships. Sometimes the right question is all it takes to open the door to a conversation you’ll both remember.

One of the conversation starters that I chose was:
“If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be?”
My daughter chose to say my dad. And that took me back. My father passed away before she was born, and I have shared so many memories about him with her; she feels like she knows him personally and would love to have a conversation with him. I was not expecting that response at all. Another unexpected bonus with tech.
It’s an experience that proves my point. As parents, we can inspire children to use technology as a tool to enrich real life rather than as a substitute for it. Allow AI to help save time with brainstorming while your family embraces the beauty of living. It may be one of the smartest ways to use the technology yet.
