The Florida Blue Foundation, the philanthropic affiliate of Florida Blue and part of the GuideWell family of companies, is now accepting grant applications from nonprofits focused on improving maternal health outcomes in Florida. The Foundation seeks to fund Florida-based nonprofits with innovative and actionable solutions designed to improve maternal health outcomes and ensure access to quality health care services and support.
By the numbers: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Florida's maternal mortality rate is higher than the national average, with 19.4% of the state's counties classified as "maternity care deserts."
- Additionally, chronic conditions such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity significantly increase the risk of severe pregnancy-related complications and are major drivers of maternal morbidity and mortality in Florida.
To address these challenges, the Foundation is seeking to support solutions that:
- Improve maternal health outcomes for those with chronic conditions; and/or
- Provide perinatal and postpartum maternal mental health support
Special consideration will be given to organizations that use innovative AI-powered solutions, such as chatbots or predictive analytics, and to those serving people living in under-resourced communities or rural counties.
"We are dedicated to ensuring that every mother and baby in Florida receives quality care throughout each stage of pregnancy and beyond," said Susan Towler, executive director of the Florida Blue Foundation. "By supporting nonprofits that share this commitment, we aim to amplify their impact and help them reach more families in need, ultimately creating a healthier future for all Floridians.”
This is the Foundation’s second round of funding for maternal health grants, building on its earlier 2025 investment of awarding $3.1 million to eight nonprofits. The grants awarded earlier this year are supporting programs such as nurse navigators, mobile clinics, telehealth services, community-based doulas, and evidence-based group treatment programs. These organizations are:
- AdventHealth Foundation – Ocala (Citrus, Duval, Gilchrist, Levy, Marion, and Putnam counties)
- Broward Healthy Start Coalition Inc (Broward County)
- Central Florida Health Care Inc (Polk County)
- Commonsense Childbirth Inc. (Lake, Orange, and Sumter counties)
- Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition (Baker, Duval, and Nassau counties)
- Okeechobee County Family Health- Healthy Start Coalition Inc (Okeechobee county)
- Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Inc.(DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties)
- The Centre for Women, Inc. (Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties)
Florida Blue Foundation has earmarked approximately $3 million for the new grant program, offering three-and four-year grants. The latest round of grants, which will be announced in early 2026, will further accelerate progress in improving maternal health outcomes.
Nonprofit organizations with documented expertise and experience in improving maternal health outcomes are encouraged to apply for funding. Applications are due by Monday, October 6, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).
