Please join us for a talk entitled “Hello Sunshine! Selling Florida Through the Art of Postcards”" by Christy Grieger.
This talk will focus on the history of Winter Park and the state of Florida using colorful, informative postcards as a guide.
In the spring of 2023, the Winter Park History Museum was gifted with a comprehensive collection of Winter Park postcards donated by Rick Frazee. The Frazee collection contains over 1,000 Winter Park postcards detailing town life during the 1900s - 1970s. It became the inspiration for the Hello Sunshine exhibit. The WPHM has collaborated with Orange County Regional History Center, the Newberry Library, and Florida Memory for supporting material and specialty postcard images of Florida to enhance the exhibit and widen the exhibit's scope.
Our state-wide history is portrayed by postcards depicting Florida’s Native Americans, early pioneers, real estate promotion and the establishment and growth of cities. Industries including timber, citrus, vegetables, sugar, and cotton will tell the story of Florida’s early commerce. The successful story of marketing Florida as a “vacation destination” will be highlighted with postcards of tourist attractions, hotels, and resorts.
